Lüftung

Lüftung is the German word for ventilation. It refers to the process of replacing or exchanging air in any space to provide high indoor air quality. This can involve the exchange of air from the outside with indoor air or the circulation of air within the building. Ventilation is essential for maintaining a healthy and comfortable indoor environment by removing pollutants, moisture, and odors, and by supplying fresh air.

There are two main types of ventilation: natural and mechanical. Natural ventilation relies on natural forces such as wind pressure and the stack effect (warm air rising) to move air through a building. This can be achieved through open windows, doors, and other passive openings. Mechanical ventilation, on the other hand, uses fans and ductwork to actively control the movement of air. This includes exhaust ventilation, which removes stale air, and supply ventilation, which brings in fresh air.

Hybrid ventilation systems combine elements of both natural and mechanical ventilation, using mechanical assistance when natural forces are insufficient. The goal of any ventilation system is to ensure adequate air exchange rates, which are measured in air changes per hour (ACH). Proper ventilation is crucial in residential, commercial, and industrial settings to prevent issues like condensation, mold growth, and the buildup of harmful gases. Effective ventilation contributes to occupant well-being, productivity, and the longevity of the building structure.
