Lõikekiirendust is an Estonian term that translates to "shear acceleration" in English. It refers to the rate of change of shear velocity within a material. Shear velocity itself is the velocity of a fluid or a solid element moving parallel to a surface, while the velocity of the adjacent layer or surface is different. This difference in velocity creates a shearing effect.

Shear acceleration is a fundamental concept in fluid dynamics and solid mechanics. In fluids, it plays a crucial role in phenomena such as turbulence, viscosity, and the formation of boundary layers. For instance, when a fluid flows over a stationary surface, the fluid particles in contact with the surface are at rest, while those further away move at higher velocities.
