Längregående

Längregående is a rarely used term in Swedish that is generally considered a nonstandard or misspelled variant of längsgående. The established word for describing something oriented along the length of a body or object is längsgående.

Etymology and meaning: While a productive Swedish form for directional length would normally use längsgående, a hypothetical längregående would be constructed from a length-related root with the present participle suffix -gående. In standard usage, however, längsgående is the preferred form, and längregående is not recognized in major dictionaries.

Usage: In anatomy, botany, engineering and related fields, längsgående describes longitudinal orientation—along the length of a structure rather than across it. Common phrases include längsgående snitt (longitudinal section), längsgående fiber (longitudinally oriented fiber), and länggsnitts or längdsnitt to refer to lengthwise cuts. The term längregående does not appear in authoritative technical Swedish and should be avoided in formal writing to prevent misinterpretation.
