Längelmäki

Längelmäki is a former municipality in Finland, located in the Pirkanmaa region. It was merged with the municipality of Jämsä on January 1, 2007. Prior to the merger, Längelmäki had a population of approximately 1,500 residents. The area is characterized by its natural landscape, featuring numerous lakes and forests, which are typical of the Finnish Lakeland.

The history of Längelmäki dates back to the 17th century, when it was established as a chapel parish. The name Längelmäki is believed to derive from the Finnish words "länki" (a type of fishing net) and "mäki" (hill), possibly referring to a geographical feature or a historical event. Agriculture and forestry were historically the primary economic activities in the region.

One of the notable features of Längelmäki was its picturesque scenery, attracting visitors interested in outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, and berry picking. The natural environment remains a significant aspect of the area even after its incorporation into Jämsä. The former municipal center of Längelmäki still retains some of its local identity and services. The administrative changes aimed to strengthen the economic and service base of the municipalities involved by creating a larger and more viable entity.
