Water and steam are widely used due to their availability, low cost, and excellent heat transfer properties, especially at moderate temperatures. Oils, such as mineral oils or synthetic oils, are often employed for higher temperature applications where water or steam would be impractical due to boiling points or corrosion concerns. Refrigerants are specialized fluids designed for low-temperature applications, primarily in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

The effectiveness of a heat transfer medium is characterized by its thermophysical properties, such as specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, density, and viscosity.
