Lämpömittausmenetelmäs refers to the various techniques and instruments used to measure temperature. The principle behind most temperature measurement relies on the physical property of a substance that changes predictably with temperature. Common methods involve the expansion or contraction of materials, changes in electrical resistance, or the emission of thermal radiation.

One of the most widespread methods utilizes thermal expansion. Thermometers like liquid-in-glass thermometers contain a fluid, such as mercury or alcohol, that expands when heated and contracts when cooled. This expansion is then calibrated against a temperature scale. Bimetallic strip thermometers also use thermal expansion; two different metals with varying expansion rates are joined together, causing the strip to bend as the temperature changes.

Electrical methods are also prevalent. Resistance thermometers, such as Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs), use the principle that the electrical resistance of certain materials, like platinum, changes proportionally with temperature. Thermocouples generate a small voltage when two dissimilar metals are joined at different temperatures, and this voltage can be measured and converted to a temperature reading.

Non-contact methods, such as infrared thermometers, measure the thermal radiation emitted by an object. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit infrared energy, and the intensity of this radiation is directly related to the object's temperature. This is particularly useful for measuring the temperature of moving objects or those in hazardous environments. The choice of method depends on factors like the required accuracy, temperature range, and the nature of the object being measured.
