Lämpökatko

Lämpökatko is a Finnish term that translates to "heat break" or "thermal break." It refers to a gap or discontinuity in the path of heat flow, typically incorporated into the design of buildings and other structures. The primary purpose of a lämpökatko is to reduce heat transfer between two areas.

In construction, lämpökatko is commonly used in elements like balconies, concrete floor slabs that extend to the exterior, or structural connections. Without a lämpökatko, heat can easily transfer from the warmer interior to the colder exterior, leading to energy loss and potentially uncomfortable indoor temperatures. This unwanted heat transfer is known as thermal bridging.

By introducing a material with low thermal conductivity, such as specialized insulation or composite materials, at the point of connection or extension, the lämpökatko effectively interrupts the continuous path for heat.
