Lähettimistä, also known as transmitters, are electronic devices that produce radio waves and convert electrical signals into radio waves. They are essential components in various communication systems, enabling the wireless transmission of information. A transmitter typically consists of an oscillator that generates a carrier wave, a modulator that impresses the information signal onto the carrier wave, and an amplifier to boost the power of the transmitted signal. The modulated radio waves are then radiated into space by an antenna.

The primary function of a transmitter is to send information from one point to another without physical connections. This information can take many forms, including audio (as in radio broadcasting), video (as in television broadcasting), data (as in wireless internet or mobile phone communication), and control signals (as in remote controls). The frequency of the carrier wave determines the channel on which the signal is transmitted, and different frequency bands are allocated for specific purposes by regulatory bodies.

Transmitters are categorized based on their power output, frequency range, and modulation technique. Low-power transmitters are used for short-range applications like cordless phones and garage door openers, while high-power transmitters are employed for long-range broadcasting and telecommunications. Common modulation techniques include Amplitude Modulation (AM), Frequency Modulation (FM), and Phase Modulation (PM), each offering different advantages in terms of signal quality and noise resistance. The development of solid-state electronics has led to smaller, more efficient, and more reliable transmitters.
