Läheisyysilmaisimia, often translated as proximity sensors, are devices that detect the presence of nearby objects without physical contact. They are commonly used in industrial automation, robotics, and consumer electronics. These sensors work by emitting a field or beam of electromagnetic radiation, light, or sound and then monitoring for disturbances or reflections caused by an object entering the detection zone.

There are several common types of proximity sensors. Inductive proximity sensors detect metallic objects by generating an electromagnetic field. When a metallic object enters this field, it induces eddy currents in the object, which in turn dampens the sensor's oscillator and changes its output. Capacitive proximity sensors can detect both metallic and non-metallic objects by sensing changes in capacitance. They create an electrostatic field, and when an object comes near, it alters the capacitance between the sensor and the object. Photoelectric proximity sensors use a beam of light. They can operate in various modes, such as through-beam (emitter and receiver are separate), retro-reflective (light bounces off a reflector), or diffuse (light reflects off the object itself). Ultrasonic proximity sensors emit sound waves and measure the time it takes for the waves to return after reflecting off an object, thus determining distance and presence.

The choice of proximity sensor depends on factors such as the type of material to be detected, the required detection range, environmental conditions like dust or moisture, and the desired output signal. Their non-contact operation makes them ideal for applications where physical contact could damage the object or the sensor, or where high-speed detection is necessary.
