This pattern is considered relative rather than absolute, meaning that the proportion of lymphocytes within the CSF white blood cell differential is lower than typically expected, even if the total white blood cell count is within the normal range.

The significance of lymphocytorestricted CSF lies in its association with certain conditions. It is often seen in viral meningitis, where the initial inflammatory response may involve a more prominent neutrophilic component, followed by a shift towards lymphocytic predominance.
