Lymfeavløp

Lymfeavløp refers to the drainage of lymph fluid from tissues throughout the body. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes, and organs that plays a crucial role in fluid balance, immune defense, and fat absorption. Lymph fluid, which is derived from blood plasma that leaks out of capillaries into the interstitial spaces, picks up waste products, cellular debris, and pathogens as it percolates through the tissues. This fluid then enters the lymphatic capillaries.

From the lymphatic capillaries, lymph is transported through progressively larger lymphatic vessels. Along the way, it passes through lymph nodes, which are small, bean-shaped structures that filter the lymph and house immune cells like lymphocytes. These cells are vital for detecting and fighting infections. The lymph then continues its journey through the lymphatic network, eventually returning to the bloodstream via the thoracic duct and the right lymphatic duct, which empty into large veins in the neck.

Proper lymfeavløp is essential for maintaining health. When lymfeavløp is impaired, for example, due to surgery, infection, or congenital conditions, lymph fluid can accumulate in the tissues, leading to lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling. This swelling can cause discomfort, restrict movement, and increase the risk of infection in the affected area. Interventions aimed at improving lymfeavløp are therefore an important part of managing conditions affecting the lymphatic system.
