Lyhytpoltto

The word combines lyhyt (short) and poltto (burning or combustion), and the concept appears in Finnish technical literature as a way to discuss controlled, intermittent burning.

In practice, lyhytpoltto refers to a controlled burst of fuel-air combustion produced by rapid cycling of the fuel valve, igniter, or air supply within a burner. The resulting flame is short-lived, typically lasting from a few milliseconds to a fraction of a second, and may be repeated in pulses. This approach can be used to enhance heat transfer, stabilize flames under challenging venting conditions, or reduce peak temperatures and emissions compared with steady flames.

Mechanisms commonly involve pulsed or modulated fuel delivery, fast ignition, and tailored mixing strategies. Control systems may use flame sensors, pressure or flow measurements, and feedback loops to maintain the desired pulse characteristics. Depending on the configuration, lyhytpoltto can be implemented with premixed or non-premixed flames and is analyzed in terms of flame dynamics, heat release rate, and emission formation.
