Lutra

Lutra is a genus of otters belonging to the family Mustelidae. The genus currently contains two extant species: the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) and the hairy-nosed otter (Lutra sumatrana). These semi-aquatic mammals are found across Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa, inhabiting freshwater and coastal environments. Their diet primarily consists of fish, amphibians, crustaceans, and sometimes small mammals and birds. Lutra species are known for their streamlined bodies, powerful tails, and webbed feet, adaptations well-suited for swimming and hunting in water.

The Eurasian otter is the most widespread species, with a range that extends from Europe to eastern Asia. It is a solitary animal, primarily active at dusk and dawn. The hairy-nosed otter, found in Southeast Asia, is considered critically endangered, facing significant threats from habitat loss and poaching. Both species build dens, often called holts, in riverbanks or other sheltered locations. Lutra otters play an important role in their ecosystems as predators, helping to regulate fish populations. Conservation efforts are underway for both species, particularly for the critically endangered hairy-nosed otter, to protect their habitats and ensure their long-term survival.
