Lusíadas

The Lusíadas is an epic poem written by the Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camões, first published in 1572. It is considered the national epic of Portugal and a masterpiece of Portuguese literature. The poem celebrates the Portuguese Age of Discovery, focusing on the historic 1498 voyage of Vasco da Gama to India.

Camões structured the poem in ten cantos, using ottava rima, a verse form consisting of eight lines of iambic pentameter. The narrative intertwines historical events with mythological elements, drawing heavily on classical epics like Homer's Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid.
