Luonnonjäähdytys, known in English as natural cooling, refers to a range of methods that utilize ambient environmental conditions to cool buildings or industrial processes without relying on mechanical refrigeration. This approach leverages natural phenomena like evaporation, air movement, and thermal mass to dissipate heat.

One common form of natural cooling is evaporative cooling. This process involves passing warm air over water or wet surfaces, causing the water to evaporate. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, thus lowering its temperature. This is particularly effective in arid climates where humidity is low. Another method involves strategic building design. Architects can orient buildings to take advantage of prevailing winds, creating cross-ventilation that flushes out warm air and draws in cooler air. The use of thermal mass, such as concrete or stone, in building construction can also contribute to natural cooling. These materials absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night, moderating indoor temperatures.

Nighttime ventilation is another technique where buildings are designed to be cooled by circulating cooler night air through the structure, absorbing heat accumulated during the day. This stored coolness then helps maintain a lower temperature during the following day. In industrial settings, natural cooling can involve using large bodies of water or natural air currents to cool machinery or processes. The underlying principle is to harness free and readily available environmental resources to achieve cooling, thereby reducing energy consumption and environmental impact associated with conventional cooling systems.
