Luomusäännöt

Luomusäännöt refers to the regulations and guidelines governing the cultivation and sale of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), particularly in Finland. These rules are primarily set by the European Union and then implemented through national legislation. The core purpose of luomusäännöt is to ensure the safety of GMOs for human health and the environment, as well as to provide consumers with information and choice.

In practice, luomusäännöt cover various aspects of GMOs, including their research, development, cultivation, import, export, and labeling. Any organism whose genetic material has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally by mating and/or natural recombination is considered a GMO. Before a GMO can be released into the environment or placed on the market within the EU, it must undergo a rigorous authorization process. This process involves a thorough risk assessment conducted by scientific bodies to evaluate potential impacts on health and the environment.

Labeling is a key component of luomusäännöt. Products containing GMOs, or derived from GMOs, must be clearly labeled to inform consumers. This allows consumers to make informed choices about the food they purchase. There are exceptions for trace amounts of authorized GMOs or if the GMO is not detectable in the final product. The enforcement of luomusäännöt is overseen by relevant national authorities, which monitor compliance and take action in cases of non-adherence.
