Lumpputyykdestä, also known as adipose tissue or body fat, is a connective tissue found throughout the body. It is primarily composed of adipocytes, specialized cells that store energy in the form of lipids. Adipose tissue plays several crucial roles in the human body. It acts as an insulator, helping to maintain body temperature. It also serves as a shock absorber, protecting vital organs from physical damage. Furthermore, adipose tissue is a significant endocrine organ, producing hormones such as leptin, which regulates appetite, and adiponectin, which influences glucose and fatty acid metabolism.

There are two main types of adipose tissue: white adipose tissue and brown adipose tissue. White adipose tissue is the most abundant type and is primarily involved in energy storage. It forms the larger fat deposits in the body. Brown adipose tissue, found in smaller quantities, is specialized for thermogenesis, the generation of heat. This is particularly important in infants and hibernating animals.

The amount and distribution of adipose tissue can vary significantly among individuals and are influenced by genetics, diet, physical activity, and hormonal factors. While a certain amount of adipose tissue is essential for health, excessive accumulation, particularly visceral fat (fat around the abdominal organs), is linked to increased risk of various health problems, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain cancers. Conversely, too little adipose tissue can also lead to health issues.
