Luistonhallintaa

Luistonhallintaa, often referred to as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or by various manufacturer-specific names, is a safety system designed to prevent a vehicle from losing control, particularly during evasive maneuvers or on slippery surfaces. It works by detecting and reducing skidding.

The system uses a network of sensors, including wheel speed sensors, steering angle sensors, and yaw rate sensors, to monitor the vehicle's direction of travel and compare it to the driver's intended path. If a discrepancy is detected, indicating a loss of traction, the ESC system intervenes automatically.

Intervention typically involves applying individual wheel brakes to help steer the vehicle back onto its intended path. In some cases, the engine's power may also be reduced to further assist in regaining control. The primary goal of luistonhallintaa is to prevent oversteer (when the rear of the car slides out) and understeer (when the front of the car pushes wide).

Luistonhallintaa is considered a crucial active safety feature and is standard equipment in most new vehicles sold in many countries. While it significantly enhances vehicle stability and driver safety, it is important to remember that it is a driver aid and cannot overcome the laws of physics.
