Luftkapillærbarrieren refers to a phenomenon observed in materials, particularly porous ones, where the presence of an air gap prevents the movement of water through capillary action. This principle is fundamental in various applications related to moisture control and insulation.

In construction, for instance, an air cavity within a wall acts as a luftkapillærbarrieren. When water is present on the exterior face, capillary forces attempt to draw it into the wall's porous material. However, if a continuous air gap is present, it interrupts the continuous path of water, effectively blocking its ingress. This is crucial for preventing dampness, mold growth, and structural damage within buildings.

Similarly, in textiles and certain engineered materials, a carefully designed air layer can serve as a luftkapillærbarrieren. This can be used to create waterproof or water-resistant fabrics by preventing moisture from wicking through the material's fibers.
