Lubiri

Lubiri, also known as the Mengo Palace, is a royal palace in Kampala, Uganda. It is one of the three official residences of the Kabaka (King) of the Buganda Kingdom. The palace is situated on Mengo Hill and is a significant historical and cultural landmark. Originally built in 1885, it has undergone numerous renovations and expansions over the years.

The Lubiri was the primary residence of the Kabaka until 1966 when it was attacked by the Ugandan government forces led by Milton Obote. This event led to the abolition of the Buganda Kingdom and the exile of Kabaka Mutesa II. Following this, the palace fell into disuse for a period.

In recent decades, with the restoration of the Buganda Kingdom's semi-autonomous status, the Lubiri has been partially restored and once again serves as a royal residence, albeit with a more symbolic role. It houses administrative offices for the Buganda government and is a site for various cultural ceremonies and events. Visitors can tour certain parts of the palace grounds, which offer insights into the history and traditions of the Buganda Kingdom. The architecture reflects a blend of traditional and colonial influences. The palace complex includes several buildings, gardens, and courtyards, each with its own historical significance.
