In many contexts, lowtech is contrasted with high-tech or advanced technologies, though the distinction is not absolute.

In development, humanitarian aid, and sustainable design, lowtech or appropriate technology aims to match solutions to local needs and capacities. Core principles include reliance on local production and labor, modular and repairable design, use of durable materials, minimal energy requirements, and lifetime upkeep. Common examples include hand tools and mechanical devices (hammers, saws, hand-cranked generators), bicycles and pedal-powered equipment, gravity-fed water systems, ram pumps, simple solar water heaters, rainwater harvesting, and earthen or cob building techniques.

Criticism and limitations: lowtech is not universally suitable; some tasks require high-tech capabilities or large-scale infrastructure. Critics argue that a focus on lowtech can overlook efficiency gains or the potential of innovative approaches. Lifecycle costs, availability of spare parts, and the need for skilled labor can affect long-term viability. Proponents emphasize that appropriate technology seeks an balance between capability, accessibility, and resilience rather than rejecting modern technology entirely.
