Lower than normal is a qualitative description used in medicine and laboratory science to indicate that a measured value lies below established reference ranges. It is not a diagnosis by itself, but flags a potential abnormality that may warrant further assessment in clinical context. Reference ranges are derived from measurements in healthy populations and can vary with age, sex, ethnicity, and the testing method or instrument. Common domains include hematology (low hemoglobin or hematocrit indicating anemia, subnormal red cell mass), chemistry (low electrolytes such as sodium or potassium), and endocrinology (low hormone levels in certain conditions).
