The history of Lourdes began in February 1858 when a 14-year-old peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous reported seeing a vision of a "beautiful lady" in a grotto near the Gave River. Over the course of 18 appearances, the girl described the figure as the Immaculate Conception, a title later adopted by the Catholic Church. The apparitions drew increasing attention, and by 1862, the site had become a major pilgrimage destination. Bernadette herself became a nun and later a saint, canonized in 1933.

The Grotto of Massabielle, where the apparitions occurred, remains the focal point of Lourdes. It is surrounded by a series of basilicas, including the Basilica of Saint-Pierre, the Basilica of the Rosary, and the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The town also features the Sanctuary of Lourdes, which includes hospitals, shelters, and facilities to accommodate the thousands of pilgrims who visit annually.
