Longovicus

Longovicus is an Iron Age fortified settlement located in present-day Poland. The site lies on the eastern edge of the Radom Plateau, in the Kozienice County of the Masovian Voivodeship. Excavations at Longovicus have shed light on the lives of the local Celtic population, providing insight into their societal organization, economy, and cultural practices.

Archaeological findings suggest that Longovicus was an important center of the Scordisci tribe, a Celtic group that inhabited the region during the La Tène period. The settlement was surrounded by a complex system of fortifications, comprising a series of wooden palisades reinforced with earthen banks. Excavations have revealed a large sequence of wooden palisades, dating back to the 5th century BCE.

The site features numerous burial grounds, containing Roman and Celtic artifacts. It is believed that the monument was constructed in several stages, possibly reflecting various phases of occupation and rebuild. Grave goods, discovered within the tombs, indicate a mix of Celtic and Roman influences.

Research at Longovicus has contributed to a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between the Celtic and Roman civilizations in the area.
