Loittonujen

Loittonujen is a Finnish language term that refers to a subgroup of indigenous Sami people living in northern Finland. They are part of the larger Sami population, which inhabits the Nordic and Arctic regions.

Loittonujen inhabit the region surrounding Lake Inari and Lake Paatsjärvi, primarily in the municipality of Inari. This area is situated in the northernmost part of the country, bordering Norway and Russia. The terrain is characterized by vast wetlands, forests, and numerous lakes.

Regarding their livelihood, Loittonujen traditionally engage in hunting, fishing, and herding of reindeer. The Sami people have long been associated with herding and the production of fur, wool, and meat from these domesticated animals. They also practice handicrafts, such as wood and stone carving.

Throughout history, Loittonujen have maintained close cultural and linguistic ties with other indigenous Sami groups in the region. The Sami people possess a distinct language, which belongs to the Uralic language family. They also have a rich spiritual heritage that reflects their connection to the land, forests, and animals.

Today, Loittonujen number approximately several dozen individuals living in this region. Many have relocated to urban areas for education and employment opportunities. The Finnish government recognizes the rights of indigenous peoples, including the Loittonujen, to manage and protect their traditional lands and resources.
