Logikkregler

Logikkregler, or rules of logic, are the formal principles used to derive valid conclusions from given premises within formal systems. They encompass rules of inference that govern how one may move from one or more statements to another, as well as equivalence rules that allow transforming statements into logically equivalent forms. The study is central to mathematics, computer science, philosophy, and linguistics, and underpins formal proofs, argument analysis, and automated reasoning.

In propositional logic, common logikkregler include modus ponens (from P and P→Q infer Q), modus tollens (from P→Q and not Q infer not P), hypothetical syllogism (from P→Q and Q→R infer P→R), disjunctive syllogism (P∨Q and not P infer Q), conjunction introduction and elimination, disjunction introduction, and rules for negation such as double negation elimination and De Morgan’s laws. There are also structural rules such as contraction, weakening, and the commutativity, associativity, and distributivity of logical connectives that justify rearrangements.

In predicate logic, rules address quantifiers, such as universal instantiation (from ∀x P(x) infer P(a)), universal generalization (from P(x) infer ∀x P(x) under appropriate conditions), existential instantiation (from ∃x P(x) infer P(c) for a new constant), and existential generalization. Equality rules and domain-related conditions may also be included in logical systems.

Logikkregler can vary between logical systems. Classical logic includes the law of the excluded middle and double negation elimination, whereas intuitionistic logic rejects some of these principles. In practice, logikkregler are used to construct formal proofs, validate arguments, and implement automated reasoning in software development, formal verification, and artificial intelligence.
