Logikkoperasjoner, also known as logical operations, are fundamental operations in logic that combine truth values to produce a new truth value. They form the basis of propositional logic and Boolean algebra, and are essential in mathematics, philosophy, and computer science.

The most common logikkoperasjoner are conjunction (AND), disjunction (OR), negation (NOT), implication (IF ... THEN), equivalence (IF AND ONLY IF), and exclusive or (XOR). Conjunction yields true only when both operands are true; disjunction yields true when at least one operand is true; negation inverts the truth value. Implication is true unless a true premise leads to a false conclusion, while equivalence is true when both operands share the same truth value. XOR is true when exactly one operand is true.

Truth tables precisely define the result of each operation for all possible input combinations. For example, the AND table lists four rows for the two binary variables and shows the single true row, whereas the OR table yields true in three of the four rows. These tables enable mechanical reasoning and the derivation of identities such as De Morgan’s laws, which relate conjunctions to disjunctions via negation: NOT(A AND B) is equivalent to NOT A OR NOT B, and NOT(A OR B) equals NOT A AND NOT B.

In computer science, logikkoperasjoner underpin digital logic design, programming language control structures, and database query processing. Logical gates mirror the operations – the AND gate, OR gate, NOT gate, etc. – and serve as building blocks for arithmetic circuits and processors. The ability to rigorously manipulate truth values through these operations is crucial for proving the correctness of algorithms, designing fault‑tolerant systems, and formal verification.
