Lmjölksyra

Lmjölksyra, also known as lactic acid, is an organic acid with the chemical formula C3H6O3. It is a chiral molecule, meaning it exists in two stereoisomeric forms: L-lactic acid (S-lactic acid) and D-lactic acid (R-lactic acid). The L-isomer is the more common and biologically significant form. Lactic acid is naturally produced in the human body during strenuous exercise through anaerobic respiration, where glucose is broken down in the absence of oxygen to produce energy. This process leads to a buildup of lactic acid in muscles, causing the burning sensation often associated with fatigue.

Beyond its role in human metabolism, lactic acid is a key component in various industrial and food applications. It is widely used as a food additive (E325) for its sour taste and preservative properties, found in products like yogurt, sauerkraut, pickles, and sourdough bread. In the cosmetic industry, it is utilized for its moisturizing and exfoliating capabilities. Furthermore, lactic acid is a precursor for the production of polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable and compostable plastic. Its production can occur through fermentation processes using various microorganisms, or through chemical synthesis.
