Llasijamuotoon

Llasijamuotoon is a term that appears in some Finnish-language teaching materials and glossaries to refer to forming a word into the adessive case form, i.e., the locative form expressed with the suffix -lla/-llä. It is not a standard grammatical label in contemporary Finnish linguistics; the canonical term is adessiivi or adessiivimuoto. Because of its informal usage, llasijamuotoon is sometimes encountered in student-oriented explanations to describe the process of adding the -lla/-llä ending to a noun to indicate a static location.

Morphology and formation operate as in standard Finnish grammar. The adessive suffix -lla/-llä attaches to the noun stem to indicate location, behind phonological adjustments that occur with different stems. Common examples include talo → talolla (on the house) and kissa → kissalla (on the cat). The form for pöytä is pöydällä (on the table). While the underlying idea is straightforward, the exact surface shape of the adessive form can vary due to vowel harmony, stem changes, and consonant alternations typical of Finnish.

Usage and meaning. The adessive form primarily marks location, as in on or at a surface. It can also occur in metaphorical or extended senses in some expressions, but its core function remains location-oriented. In formal linguistic writing, speakers generally refer to the adessiivimuoto rather than using llasijamuotoon.
