Liverresident

Liverresident is a term sometimes used to describe cells and cell populations that reside in the liver for extended periods, as opposed to circulating cells. It is not a formal anatomical designation, but it is used to discuss hepatic tissue-resident cells and their unique roles in liver biology, immunity, and metabolism.

Key examples and roles. The liver hosts several resident cell types, including Kupffer cells, which are liver-resident macrophages patrolling sinusoids to clear pathogens and debris and to coordinate immune signaling. Hepatic stellate cells are resident mesenchymal cells that store vitamin A and regulate extracellular matrix; they can contribute to fibrosis when activated by injury. The liver also contains liver-resident natural killer (NK) cells and tissue-resident memory T cells (Trm), which provide rapid local immune responses upon reinfection. Parenchymal hepatocytes are the main functional liver cells that remain within liver tissue, carrying out metabolism, detoxification, and protein synthesis. Other resident cells include liver sinusoidal endothelial cells and cholangiocytes, each contributing to vascular, bile, and immune environments.

Development and turnover. Many liver-resident cells are long-lived and capable of self-renewal, with some deriving from embryonic precursors (for example, certain Kupffer cells). Others may be replenished by circulating precursors under specific conditions. Residency is associated with distinctive tissue localization, gene expression, and interactions with neighboring cells in the liver microenvironment.

Clinical relevance. Alterations in the function or number of liverresident cells can influence liver diseases, including hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis, as well as responses to infection and transplantation. Understanding liverresident populations informs therapies targeting hepatic immunity, fibrosis, and regeneration.
