Litiumsalter are chemical compounds that contain lithium ions paired with various anions. They cover a broad range of chemical classes and have diverse roles in medicine, industry and research. Among the most common are lithium carbonate (Li2CO3), lithium chloride (LiCl), lithium hydroxide (LiOH) and lithium sulfate (Li2SO4). These salts can be produced from lithium-containing minerals such as spodumene or from lithium-rich brines, typically by concentrating lithium and converting it into the desired salt forms.

In medicine, lithium salts, especially lithium carbonate, are used as mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder and sometimes as adjunctive therapy in other mood disorders. They can help modulate neurotransmitter signaling and neural plasticity, but require regular monitoring due to a narrow therapeutic window and potential effects on kidney and thyroid function, as well as interactions with other medications.

In industry, lithium salts serve in ceramics and glass production to improve heat resistance and processing properties, in lubricants and polymers, and as reagents in organic synthesis. In energy storage, certain lithium salts, such as LiPF6, are common electrolytes in lithium-ion battery systems, where they enable ion transport in organic solvent-based electrolytes.

Safety and environmental considerations vary by specific salt. Many lithium salts are irritants and should be handled with appropriate protective equipment. The mining and processing of lithium-bearing resources can affect water resources and ecosystems, leading to ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact and to develop more sustainable extraction methods.
