Lithogener

Lithogener is a term encountered in some discussions of geology and materials science to describe a process or device that generates lithic material, i.e., stone or stone-like matter. The term is not widely standardized and does not correspond to a single established technique; rather, it is used as a generic label for phenomena or technologies aimed at producing rock-like material either through natural replication of geological processes or through synthetic methods.

Etymology and scope: From lithos (stone) and genos/genes (to produce). In most professional literature the concept of lithogeneration or lithogenesis is discussed using more precise terms such as lithogenesis, rock formation, or synthesis of stone-like materials. The term lithogener may appear in speculative writing, early-stage research proposals, or hobbyist discussions.

Natural lithogeneration describes geological processes: metamorphism, diagenesis, crystallization in magmatic systems, or sedimentary cementation. Artificial lithogeneration includes laboratory synthesis of stone-like materials, such as geopolymers, cemented aggregates, or biogenic silica deposition. Emerging approaches include additive manufacturing of concretes with stone-like properties and mineralization processes that precipitate minerals within gels to create rock analogs.

Applications and challenges: Potential uses include construction substitutes, restoration materials, or space resource utilization. Challenges include controlling microstructure, long-term durability, and environmental impact. Because lithogenerator is not a standard term, researchers typically prefer precise descriptors of the underlying process.
