Litharen

Litharen is a hypothetical silicate mineral described in speculative geology and science fiction. It is proposed to form under high-pressure metamorphic conditions in subduction-zone environments and to exhibit substantial hardness and durability.

Composition and structure: Litharen is described as a dense silicate with a layered tetrahedral framework, with iron and magnesium substituting for aluminum in the lattice. The mineral is said to crystallize in the monoclinic system and to display a vitreous to submetallic luster. Typical color ranges from steel gray to olive-green; the streak is pale gray. Hardness is often cited as 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale.

Occurrence and formation: In hypothetical models, litharen forms when basaltic or andesitic slabs release fluids under extreme pressures and temperatures, allowing the creation of a basalt-silicate phosphate complex.
