It refers to the process by which certain traits that increase an organism's success in finding a mate and producing offspring become more common in a population over generations. This is a type of natural selection, but it specifically focuses on reproductive success rather than just survival.

There are two main types of sexual selection: intersexual selection and intrasexual selection. Intersexual selection occurs when one sex (usually females) chooses mates from the other sex based on certain desirable traits, such as elaborate plumage, bright colors, or complex courtship displays. These traits may not directly aid in survival, but they signal good genes, health, or resources to potential mates. However, if this trait leads to greater mating success, it will be favored by reproductive selection, even if it reduces the individual's overall lifespan.
