Lisäysoperaattori, often translated as "increment operator" in English, is a fundamental concept in many programming languages. It is a shorthand operator that increases the value of a variable by one. The most common forms are the prefix increment (e.g., ++variable) and the postfix increment (e.g., variable++).

The primary function of the lisäysoperaattori is to modify a variable's value directly. In the case of prefix increment, the variable's value is incremented before its current value is used in an expression. Conversely, with postfix increment, the variable's current value is used in the expression, and then its value is incremented afterward. This distinction is crucial when the increment operation is part of a larger statement.

For example, in the statement `y = ++x;`, the value of `x` is first increased by one, and then the new value of `x` is assigned to `y`. In contrast, in `y = x++;`, the current value of `x` is assigned to `y`, and then `x` is incremented.
