Lintroduzione

L'introduzione is the Italian term for the introduction, the opening section of a text. It serves to present the topic, define the scope, state the purpose, and outline the structure of the work. Its function is to orient the reader and set the context, indicating what will be covered and why it matters. In academic, scientific, and non-fiction writing, the introduction often states the research question or objective, explains the significance of the topic, and provides an overview of the approach or methods. It may also define key terms and summarize relevant background information or literature to situate the work.

In different genres, the form and emphasis of the introduction can vary. In books and essays, it may introduce the issue, present a thesis or central argument, and describe how the work is organized. In scholarly articles, the introduction typically reviews essential background at a high level, justifies the study, and states the hypotheses or research aims. In non-fiction, it might recount the motivation for writing, the intended audience, and the intended scope or limitations.

The introduction is distinct from related elements such as the prefazione (foreword) or nota introduttiva (introductory note). A prefazione is usually written by someone other than the author and may discuss broader significance or reception, while the introduction is authored by the writer to prepare the reader for the content that follows.

Beyond print, the concept of an introduction also appears in other media as opening scenes, prologues, or introductory passages that establish mood, setting, or context for the work ahead.
