Linssinvaihtomenetelmä

Linssinvaihtomenetelmä, often translated as lens replacement surgery, is a surgical procedure primarily used to treat cataracts and refractive errors. In the case of cataracts, the clouded natural lens of the eye is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure restores clear vision that has been impaired by the cataract.

Beyond cataract treatment, the linssinvaihtomenetelmä can also address refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. For these conditions, a special type of IOL, known as a premium IOL, is implanted. These premium IOLs can correct vision at multiple distances, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery.

The procedure itself is typically performed on an outpatient basis and involves creating a small incision in the cornea. An ultrasonic device is used to break up the clouded natural lens, which is then suctioned out. The artificial IOL is then folded and inserted through the incision, unfolding into place within the eye. The incision is usually self-sealing, and the recovery period is generally swift, with most patients experiencing significant visual improvement within a few days. While generally safe, like any surgical procedure, it carries potential risks and complications.
