Linksschrift

Linksschrift, also known as mirror writing or left-handed script, refers to handwriting that is written from right to left. This is the reverse of the conventional left-to-right direction of most Western alphabets. Individuals who write in linksschrift typically produce a mirrored image of normal text, which can often only be read clearly by holding a mirror up to it. While the term "linksschrift" directly translates to "left script," it primarily describes the direction of writing rather than the dominant hand used. Therefore, both left-handed and right-handed individuals can produce linksschrift.

Historically, linksschrift has been associated with a few notable figures. Leonardo da Vinci, for instance, famously used mirror writing for many of his personal notes, potentially as a method to keep his ideas private or simply due to a personal preference or writing habit. This practice is not a disorder and is usually a voluntary choice. In some cases, it can be a symptom of certain neurological conditions or a result of brain injury, but this is less common. For most individuals who exhibit linksschrift, it is a learned or adopted writing style. While it can appear unusual to those accustomed to standard script, it does not inherently indicate any cognitive deficit.
