Linienelement
Linienelement, or line element, is a concept in differential geometry and mathematical physics that encodes the infinitesimal distance along a curve in a space equipped with a metric. It provides a coordinate-independent way to measure lengths and, by integration, the total length of curves.
Formally, for a smooth curve x^i(t) in an n-dimensional manifold with metric tensor g_{ij}(x), the line element
The length of a curve C is obtained by integrating the line element: L = ∫_C ds. Thus,
The line element also underpins the definition of geodesics, which are curves that extremize length or interval.
