Linienblick

Linienblick is a term used in urban design, architecture, and related disciplines to describe the visual corridor created along a defined line of sight within the built environment. The concept combines Linien (lines) and Blick (view) and is sometimes employed as an informal or context-specific counterpart to the more common term Sichtlinie, which denotes a line of sight in visual analysis. In practice, Linienblick refers to intentional preservation, shaping, or evaluation of visual connections along a line such as a street axis, sightline toward a landmark, or viewshed that extends across spaces.

Applications of Linienblick include preserving important vistas in city centers, guiding the placement of monuments or public art, and shaping pedestrian experiences along streets and squares. Architects and planners use it to ensure that significant features remain visible from key vantage points, while developers analyze potential obstructions from new buildings, vegetation, or topography to maintain proposed lines of sight.

Methods used to analyze Linienblick include digital elevation models, GIS-based sightline calculations, 3D modeling, and photogrammetry. Assessments consider height, distance, curvature of the terrain, and intervening elements such as trees or structures, aiming to balance functional requirements with aesthetic and experiential goals.
