Limitet

Limitet is a neologism used in theoretical discussions to denote a boundary value that marks a qualitative change in a system's behavior. Unlike a mathematical limit, which describes asymptotic or approaching behavior, a limtet identifies the threshold of a parameter at which the governing regime changes or a property becomes true. It is discussed in contexts such as dynamical systems, optimization, control theory, and threshold analysis, where knowing the precise threshold helps predict when a model will switch from one qualitative behavior to another.

The term appears in informal literature and online discussions in recent years. It combines the word limit with the diminutive suffix -et, suggesting a specific, bounded threshold rather than a broad limiting value. It is not part of standard terminology in mathematics, physics, or engineering, and its usage varies by author and discipline.

Formally, given a system described by state variables and a parameter p, a limtet p* is the boundary value such that a property P holds for p ≥ p* but not for p < p*. In practice, p* is identified by analyzing the parameterized equations and locating the transition where the system’s qualitative behavior changes, such as a switch from stability to instability or from feasibility to infeasibility.

Limitet is closely related to, but distinct from, related concepts like thresholds, critical points, and bifurcation values.
