In Limbal Ischämie, the blood vessels in the limbus become compromised, leading to a reduction in oxygen delivery to the cornea.

As a result, the cornea experiences a lack of oxygen, which can cause damage to the corneal tissue. This can lead to corneal edema, corneal ulceration, and eventually, corneal perforation. Limbal Ischämie can be caused by a variety of factors, including trauma, chemical burns, and scleral buckling surgery.

The symptoms of Limbal Ischämie can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Patients may experience blurred vision, eye pain, and sensitivity to light. In severe cases, the condition can lead to permanent vision loss. Diagnosis is typically made using fluorescein angiography, which involves the injection of a fluorescein dye into the vein and then observing the dye as it flows through the blood vessels.

Treatment for Limbal Ischämie typically involves addressing the underlying cause of the condition, if possible. This may involve surgery to remove the underlying cause or to restore blood flow to the affected area. In cases where the condition is caused by a chemical burn, treatment may involve the use of topical antibiotics and lubricating drops to reduce discomfort and promote healing. In severe cases, a corneal transplant may be necessary to restore vision.
