Lilongwe

Lilongwe is the capital and largest city of Malawi, located in the Central Region along the Lilongwe River. It serves as the country’s political and administrative center, hosting government ministries, the Parliament, and the presidential residence, Kamuzu Palace.

The city began as a colonial-era trading post and grew significantly after independence. It was designated Malawi’s capital in 1975, moving from Zomba, and has since expanded into a major urban center with government, commerce, and international activity.

Geographically, Lilongwe sits on the central highland plateau and experiences a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. It is connected by road to other parts of the country and is served by Kamuzu International Airport, located north of the city, which handles international and domestic flights.

Economy and infrastructure in Lilongwe are dominated by government services and public administration, with a growing private sector that includes retail, finance, and construction. The city hosts several international organizations and non-governmental organizations, along with major markets and shopping centers. Kamuzu Central Hospital is the principal referral hospital in the area, serving the central region.

Education and culture are supported by various institutions and facilities within the city, including universities and research centers, as well as parks, markets, and cultural venues. As Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe functions as the country’s political, economic, and cultural hub.
