Liletta

Liletta is a brand of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS), a long-acting reversible contraceptive device. The device is inserted into the uterus by a trained healthcare provider and provides continuous contraception for up to six years. It releases a low dose of the progestin levonorgestrel locally, which thickens cervical mucus, impairs sperm movement, and thins the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of fertilization and implantation.

Liletta is used by people seeking highly effective, maintenance-free birth control. Its effectiveness is comparable to other intrauterine systems, with a very low typical-use pregnancy rate (generally reported as less than 1% per year). Many users experience changes in their menstrual bleeding pattern over time; some have lighter periods or may stop having periods altogether, while others may experience irregular bleeding or spotting during the first several months.

Insertion requires a brief office procedure, and removal can be performed at any time if contraception is no longer desired or if side effects occur. Fertility typically returns quickly after removal.

Common side effects include irregular bleeding or spotting, cramping, headaches, breast tenderness, and mood changes. Rare but serious risks include device expulsion, uterine perforation during insertion, and pelvic infection. Liletta is contraindicated in pregnancy and in individuals with certain uterine abnormalities, active pelvic infection, or allergy to levonorgestrel or device components.

Liletta was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2015 and is manufactured by Allergan (now part of AbbVie). It is available in many countries as a contraceptive option within the spectrum of LNG-IUS devices.
