Likströmväxlar, often translated as direct current relays or DC relays, are a type of electrical switch that uses a direct current (DC) coil to control the opening or closing of contacts. Unlike alternating current (AC) relays, which are designed to operate with AC power, DC relays are specifically engineered for DC circuits. This distinction is crucial because the electromagnetic principles governing their operation differ between AC and DC.

The fundamental design of a DC relay typically involves a coil of wire wrapped around an iron core. When a DC current flows through the coil, it generates a magnetic field. This magnetic field attracts an armature, which is a movable metal part. The movement of the armature actuates a set of contacts, either closing an open circuit or opening a closed circuit. The contacts are usually made of materials that offer good electrical conductivity and resistance to wear, such as silver alloys.

DC relays are widely used in various applications where direct current is prevalent. This includes automotive systems, battery-powered devices, telecommunications equipment, and industrial control systems. Their ability to switch higher current loads than the control current allows for the safe and efficient operation of circuits. They are valued for their simplicity, reliability, and relatively low cost. Different configurations exist, including single-pole single-throw (SPST) and single-pole double-throw (SPDT) relays, offering flexibility for various circuit designs.
