Likströmladdning, also known as DC charging, refers to the process of charging an electric vehicle using direct current (DC). This is typically achieved through dedicated DC fast chargers, often found at public charging stations. Unlike alternating current (AC) charging, which requires the vehicle's onboard charger to convert the AC power to DC, DC charging bypasses the onboard charger. The DC power from the charging station is fed directly into the vehicle's battery management system. This allows for significantly faster charging speeds compared to AC charging, as the limitation is primarily the capacity of the charging station and the vehicle's battery acceptance rate. DC charging is crucial for enabling longer journeys and reducing charging times, making electric vehicles more practical for a wider range of users. The power levels for DC charging can vary considerably, ranging from tens of kilowatts to hundreds of kilowatts, depending on the charger and vehicle compatibility. The connector types used for DC charging are standardized, with common examples including CCS (Combined Charging System) and CHAdeMO.
