Liivi

Liivi is the Estonian term used for Livonian, referring to both the Livonian people and the Livonian language. The Livonians are a Finnic ethnic group whose traditional homeland lies along the western Baltic coast, in areas that are now part of Latvia and Estonia. Historically, they were part of the Livonian Confederation and were influenced by German and Baltic powers during the Middle Ages.

The Livonian language, known in Estonian as liivi keel, is a Finnic language closely related to Estonian and Finnish. It is part of the Finnic branch of the Uralic language family. From the 16th to the 20th centuries, Livonian gradually declined due to assimilation, population movement, and political pressures. By the late 20th and early 21st centuries, only a small number of native or fluent speakers remained, and the language is classified as severely endangered. Revival efforts have continued, including community language classes, documentation projects, and academic study.

In cultural and historical contexts, Liivi appears in discussions of Livonian history, the medieval Livonian Order, and the historic region of Liivimaa (Livland). The term remains part of Estonia’s and Latvia’s linguistic heritage, reflecting a once-thriving coastal culture that left a distinct imprint on the Baltic region.
