Liikuntahäiriöitä, often translated as movement disorders, encompass a broad range of neurological conditions that affect a person's ability to control their body's movements. These disorders can manifest in various ways, including involuntary movements, difficulties with coordination, muscle stiffness, slowness of movement, or abnormal postures. The underlying cause is typically damage or dysfunction in the parts of the brain responsible for motor control, such as the basal ganglia, cerebellum, or motor cortex.

Common types of movement disorders include Parkinson's disease, which is characterized by tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability. Dystonia involves involuntary muscle contractions that cause repetitive or twisting movements. Tremor disorders, like essential tremor, cause rhythmic shaking. Chorea refers to involuntary, irregular, and jerky movements. Ataxia describes a lack of voluntary coordination of muscle movements. Huntington's disease is a genetic disorder that causes a combination of motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms, including chorea.

The diagnosis of movement disorders usually involves a thorough medical history, neurological examination, and sometimes imaging studies like MRI or CT scans, as well as genetic testing for certain conditions. Treatment approaches vary widely depending on the specific disorder and its severity. They can include medications to manage symptoms, physical therapy to improve coordination and mobility, occupational therapy to adapt daily tasks, and in some cases, surgical interventions like deep brain stimulation. While some movement disorders can be managed to improve quality of life, many are progressive and currently have no cure. Research continues to explore new therapeutic strategies and a better understanding of the neurobiological basis of these complex conditions.
