Liigsöömishoogudega refers to episodes of excessive eating, often characterized by consuming a large amount of food in a discrete period of time, accompanied by a feeling of loss of control during the episode. These episodes are a core symptom of binge eating disorder, but can also occur in other eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa. During a binge eating episode, individuals typically consume significantly more food than they would under normal circumstances. This consumption is often rapid and may continue until an uncomfortable or painful fullness is reached. A common feature is the feeling of being unable to stop eating or control what or how much is being eaten.

Following a binge eating episode, individuals often experience intense distress, which can include feelings of guilt, shame, sadness, and self-disgust. Unlike bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder is not typically associated with recurrent compensatory behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, or excessive exercise, aimed at preventing weight gain. However, the distress and emotional turmoil following a binge can significantly impact an individual's mental health and daily functioning. The causes of binge eating episodes are complex and can involve a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, and sometimes medication, to address the underlying issues and manage the binge eating behavior.
