Liigaaasta

Liigaaasta is a term used to describe a calendar year in which there are 53 weeks instead of the usual 52. This occurs approximately every five to six years due to the fact that a standard year of 365 days is slightly less than a full 52-week cycle (52 weeks * 7 days/week = 364 days). A leap year, with 366 days, is also not a perfect multiple of seven. Therefore, to realign the calendar with the astronomical year, an extra week is occasionally added.

The inclusion of a liigaaasta means that certain weeks will be numbered 53, which can have implications for scheduling, accounting, and reporting. Businesses that operate on a weekly basis, such as those with payroll cycles or inventory management systems tied to weeks, need to account for the 53rd week. This can affect financial reporting periods, project timelines, and even marketing campaigns.

The system for determining when a liigaaasta occurs is based on a perpetual calendar or a specific algorithm. The Gregorian calendar, which is widely used, does not inherently have a 53rd week every year. Instead, the concept arises from the need to reconcile the 365 or 366 days of a year with the 7-day week structure. When the starting day of a year and the number of days in that year result in a remainder that pushes the end of the year into the 53rd week, that year is considered a liigaaasta.
